QOTM

“If more of us valued home above gold, it would be a merrier world.”

"Imagine Steve having a hard time with the language of this century (he constantly has to check that he doesn't use 1920s slang) so he doesn't talk. The other avengers have to then convince Steve to speak up more."

Steve isn’t mute but he might as well be. Oh, he’ll talk in the field, bark out orders, and he’s great when it comes to creating plans, tactics-wise, but otherwise, he doesn’t talk. Spends a lot of time drawing or scribbling in a tiny little notebook he keeps with him at all times, or he’s on his phone looking things up, brow furrowed in concentration. But he doesn’t volunteer any opinions.

The Avengers, as Tony has decided to name them, don’t exactly all hang out. They meet up around once a month so that they can keep tabs on each other, but otherwise, Clint disappears to wherever he goes, Bruce and Tony do science together, Thor goes off to Asgard. Natasha is the one who spends the most time with Steve. And Maria.

Maria’s the one who notices the quiet first. “You know,” she says while they’re both in the SHIELD-issued gym. “I remember in the stories that you were a pretty mouthy guy.”

Steve glances at her, slowing down on the treadmill finally. He still doesn’t say anything.

She swings once last time at a punching bag, arching an eyebrow. “No? Nothing?”

His lips purse a bit, and his eyebrows do something complicated that Maria can’t place before he ducks his head. Maria unwraps her hands.

“Come have lunch with me,” she says impulsively. “I’ve read all of the Howling Commandos files, but I wanna hear the stories.”

Steve’s face lights up like he can’t help it. “That’d be swell, if you’re sure,” he says excitedly and then flushes. She grins.

“You’ll catch up on the slang eventually,” she says. “And it changes all the time.” She pats his shoulder. “I like the old-fashioned anyway. It’s cute.”

Steve bites his lip but he follows her to the cafeteria. Once Maria gets him going, and gets used to the sudden thick Brooklyn drawl, she follows just fine. And she finds that as long as she doesn’t point out the bits of 1940s that slip into his language, he’s eager to talk, and funny to boot. She thinks they’ll get along fine.
